6th World University Match Racing Sailing in Nice in 2012

The 6th World University Match Racing Sailing will take place from 3 to 8 September 2012, in the harbor of the port of Nice. This competition labeled ISAF (International Sailing Federation) and FISU (International University Sports Federation) meet the global top sail university. No less than 15 nations (Australia, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, USA, France, UK, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Singapore, Slovenia, Switzerland, Turkey), 24 teams and 122 competitors (the record participation) will compete in the Bay of Angels, along the shores of the French Riviera.

This year, the first Women's World University Championship Match Racing will be inaugurated with the participation of 8 teams. The women's competition Match Racing Sailing has recently been a new Olympic discipline.

Sailing World Championships will be under the patronage of Jean-Pierre Dick elected Sailor of the Year 2011. Sailer recognized on the world stage and a native of Nice, Jean-Pierre Dick was the winner of the Transat Jacques Vabre and the Barcelona World Race.

The high level sailing competition, will also be a place of encounter and exchange between students of participating universities and a good opportunity for these athletes to discover the heritage of Nice and its beautiful surroundings.

This event organized by the Comité Régional du Sport Universitaire de Nice (CRSU), with the support of the region Provence- Alpes-Côte d'Azur (PACA), the General Council of the Alpes Maritimes and the city of Nice is expected to attract over 300 000 visitors over the Bay of Angels. The feast of the Port of Nice, a festive and popular event, which will take place on closing night of the championships, will attract more than 35 000 visitors.

The French delegation will include for girls: Claire Bossard, Julie Bossard, Pauline Courtois, Nolwenn Lemaitre, Dreau Morgan (University of Western Brittany, Brest, INSA Rennes and University of Rennes 2).

For young people, two teams will be present at Nice, the first crew will consist of Pierre Bonte, Joris Cocaud, Clément Dorso, Gatien Planson (University of Nantes), the second crew will include Pablo Castillo, Niels Gins, Pierre-Baptiste Pion, Matthieu Rique (University of La Rochelle and Poitiers University).

These crews will be accompanied by their supervisors: Bertrand Gautier (Head of Delegation), Louis Beltran (coach) and Marc Reine (coach).

Sailing Match Racing

The World University Match Racing Sailing Nice 2012 is a series of exciting duels with two identical boats, two strategies and a single winner. Spectacular situations of the races will be visible from the coast by a large and passionate public. A unique opportunity to see the most talented skippers evolve on the beautiful blue.

Sailing match racing is driven by its values: the taste of the effort with the importance of technique and tactics, respect for the environment with a sport depending on weather conditions, near elements, the responsibility to towards a position with respect instructions of the skipper, discipline coordination during maneuvers, teamwork cooperation in climate hazards; rigor in respect of maintenance and equipment.
